After briefly reviewing a few ingredients of some statistical
approaches to quantum gravity we assess the possibility of using basic
elements, say spin network states, to build up an emergent description of
gravity in terms of distribution or correlation functions. This top-down
scheme is contrasted with the more common bottom-up one.
